The Molecular Biology Institute at UCLA
ORU Membership and Space Guidelines

The Molecular Biology Institute (MBI) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU), bringing together faculty across departmental and disciplinary lines. The MBI organizes seminars and other programs with the goal of stimulating research and teaching in molecular biology at UCLA.

Institute FULL Membership Criteria:
  • Established UCLA ladder faculty (Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor)
  • Interest and participation in activities of the Institute (see below).
  • Research area should be directed towards developing a molecular level understanding of fundamental biological processes.
  • Relevance and quality of publications.
  • External grant support.
Ways of Participating in Institute Activities:
  • Attendance at the MBI Faculty Research Club lunch seminars.
  • Speaking at the MBI Faculty Research Club lunch seminars.
  • Attendance at the annual retreat.
  • Serving on MBI committees.
  • Requesting input from the MBI for major promotions.
  • Voting on MBI ballots.
  • Participation in the Interdepartmental Ph.D. program (IDP) (requires separate application).
  • Appropriate acknowledgement of the MBI in publications.
Members would not be expected to participate in all of the activities above each year, but would have a significant record of involvement in such activities over the last three-year window.

Institute ASSOCIATE Membership Criteria:
Associate Membership is appropriate for faculty with an Adjunct appointment, as well as new faculty to give them the opportunity to establish their independent research and begin interacting with current members. It is also designed for those who make important scholarly contributions to the MBI programs and are in the Research Series or Lecturers with strong research interests and current publications.

EMERITI Membership Criteria:
Retired Members who retain interest in the programs of the Institute are encouraged to be Emeriti members and share their wisdom with their colleagues!

Boyer Hall Space Allocation:
Space in Boyer Hall is allocated by the MBI Director upon the advice of the MBI Council in consultation with appropriate departmental Chairs and the Director of the UCLA DOE laboratory. Final authority for space allocation rests with the Dean of Life Sciences and the Chancellor. Boyer Hall space is designed to foster collegial interactions that are interdepartmental and interdisciplinary and that enhance scientific innovation on the UCLA campus. Sharing of space and equipment is a priority.

Membership Application:
Applications for Institute membership are reviewed twice a year: April and October. Interested faculty should request a membership application form from Bo Tendis (168 Boyer Hall, x51018; botendis@mednet.ucla.edu). The application form and a current CV, including current and pending support and publications, is reviewed by the Institute’s Membership Committee. Upon their positive recommendation, a final vote is then taken by the entire MBI membership.
